In the article, it writes about that the major search engines namely Microsoft and Google are incorporating twitter into their search system.
I feel that this is one step taken forward in the advancement of New Communication Technology (NCT). This is because Twitter (one form of NCT) is a free social networking site in which one can update their current status through short messages, also known as a tweet. This shows that the new communication sites are becoming increasingly significant among the people up till the point when even search engines are realizing the potentially large amount of information that these sites possess. From the article, we also know that the next target of these giant search engines is another popular networking site, Facebook. Thus, from the incorporating of the status updates onto the search system, we know how NCT has evolved from the various common networking sites into a vastly large avenue for information.
Lastly, since this is the last part of the last post, I just want to give my opinion on which media theory is relevant to us while doing this blog. I feel that it is the limited effects theory as we as audience, are able to resist media messages by turning off the television or not buying the newspaper. However, we still consume media products according to our own needs and due to circumstances such as the COMPULSORY blog post, in which we have to find media products to analyze with the various communication techniques that we have learnt. =D

Hey! i guess internet as a whole is the medium for NCT right? You need internet in order to access the networking sites so having those alone does not serve its purpose.
ReplyDeleteThough i don't have a twitter account, i supposed it's the same as Facebook? except that with a different label. Yup and both are very good networking sites to while time away too.
and Yes! since im not one who reads the newspaper everyday, i guessed the communication blog really motivates me to read news in order to complete the task haha! so it's a good thing afterall =)
Twitter allows us to see what other people are talking about via short updates. This is good in our fast paced society where everybody is in a rush. People can be updated quickly via short messages.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I personally feel that twitter allows people to spam the whole page that I don't intend to search for.
Pro and con..
Twitter seems to be the 'in' thing nowadays, as it is easy to use (just requires a handphone that can send sms) and can instantly update what one is doing currently at the moment. Technology is getting newer and better as days go by, and truly, the instantness of such NCT really attracts a lot of people to sign up as users.
ReplyDeleteTo put twitter in search engine can be abit detrimental, especially like Chuan Min has mentioned, whereby people can spam the whole of Google using twitter, and affect other users.
Hello!
ReplyDeleteJust curious on what's the difference between NCT and CMC(computer mediated communications)? I thought social networking sites are under CMC? Maybe I've misinterpreted so pls enlighten me :)
I'm amazed by the impacts all these social networking sites that they have on us these days. However, this may not be a good phenomenon though, as people may start to rely more on their computer for their social needs than on relationships that they have with people in real life.
I am sure that all these social networking sites are definitely making an impact on each individual. Through it, we get in touch with our long lost friends and even get to know their recent updates like what they are doing now or how have they been. All these sites form up a basic networking or rather a virtual communication between people. Therefore, communication can be in all sorts of forms and is really important in our everyday life. :D
ReplyDeleteSocial networking sites definitely makes it more convenient to keep in touch, find out what's happening to your friends as well as even date! Such varied uses of these sites can be found so easily on the internet. This comes with a price as well, privacy is lost. When you are on the internet, linked to a social networking site, one must be ready to pay the price to lose part of his/her privacy with friends or people who are not concerned viewing and gawking over what is going on in their lives.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA. HELLO NICOLE.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why the word COMPULSORY is in CAPITAL LETTERS HUH! Hahaha.
Yeahhhhhhhh! I think twitter is quite a good tool since it has gained poularity at such an exponential rate! Even I use twitter but not as excessively as Facebook of course. I practially camp by Facebook. Lol. I think NCT brings along with it quite a number of benefits. Social networking sites especially are very popluar, where teens and even adults can reconnect with old friends. It's actually really fun! I bet you know that too. haha. Yeahh. I quite thankful for NCT although it is quite bad for our interaction skills.
It is good that the search network has decided to include twitter in to their search engine as it would make searching more comprehensive. However, as commented by chuanmin, it may be deem as a liability more than an advantage. Perhaps what they could do is to limit the twitter to a category?? like searching for images in yahoo or google, you have to click the 'image' button before doing so.
ReplyDeleteTwitter is definitely a fast and effective way, to allow us to stay in touch with others with just a click. Things could also be done immediately by just sending a notification or the sharing of information.
ReplyDeletehowever, social interaction is after all something social, which involves people and contact. Although twitter allows us to do so, it is all done from a screen rather than actual face to face. All in all, everything has its advantages and it can be put to good use so long we don't over rely on it too much or go to the extreme with it
social networking on search engines?
ReplyDeletewouldn't that add in more unnecessary results being posted? =|
yea!i totally agree to what u have discussed because in this modern days people socialise through means like social networking sites. It helps to higher the chance of people communicating with one another like what''nicole''said tat with these sites we can reconnect with old friends. Thus NCT can be useful. However everything has its pros and cons.In this case, nct affect ones interation skills because interacting through sites is just typing words on the lifeless copmputer, whereas interacting with a real person is another case.
ReplyDeleteTwitter is certainly a "in" thing now for the youngster. But for how long can it last and what will they think of next? From sms, blog, msn to twitter. All will end up with their best friend as the computer.
ReplyDeleteIn our fast paced society , Twitter is the saviour which allows us to see what other people are talking about via short updates. It is useful in time of crisis where fast update is crucial as it can mean life or death. It is also a channel for those inquisitive people or "kay Poh" people for their update.
ReplyDeleteI think twitter is a good way in which information can be passed on to the most number of people in the shortest time. For example, it was relevant during the h1n1 period where it informed the most number of people on the areas where h1n1 patients we seen to be in. However, twitter is a double edge sword, as it has been a tool used to defame others as well. I feel that the use of twitter should be moderated.
ReplyDeleteI came across an article on "Smart People, Stupid Tweets. Fake News Spreads Fast on Twitter." Twitter can be a tool for good, but for mischief as well. Many have claimed Twitter can break news faster than traditional news media, for example natural disasters, like earthquakes. But we cannot be sure if the information is true anot.
ReplyDeleteWith twitter as another mean of communication, youngster had less opportunity for face to face interaction. This may resulted in them having less social skill when meeting people.
ReplyDeleteTechnology has always been largely labelled as a double-edged sword and so is twitter here as seen from previous comments. With the growing demand for more convenient and faster tool of communication, physical interaction will inevitably dwindle. Another drawback of twitter is that it will eventually become a channel for ppl to spread news and news that can tarnish ppl's reputation. Hence, some measures have to be implemented to intervene any abuse.
